Yoga Sutra 6

Book 1 Sutra 6

The translation:

Pramana – correct knowledge

Viparyaya- contrary

Vikalpa – illusion, delusion

Nidra – sleep

Smrtayah – memory

The Sutra:

“They ( the fluctuations of the previous sutras) are caused by the correct knowledge, illusions, delusions, sleep and memory.”

The explanation:

This sutra is stating that we have the correct or true knowledge or knowledge from illusions, dreams from sleep or memory.

What the Bible say’s:

The Bible talks about all of these forms of knowledge within its pages.

Illusion – 1 Cor 3:19-21 (Phi) Let no one be under any illusion over this. If any man among you thinks himself one of the world’s clever ones, let him discard his cleverness that he may learn to be truly wise. For this world’s cleverness is stupidity to God. It is written: “He that taketh the wise in their craftiness”, and again, “The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.” So let no one boast of men.

Jude 1 10: “Yes these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand (delusion) and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals these are the very things that destroy them.”

Knowledge – 1 Cor 3:19-21 (Phi) “Let no one be under any illusion over this. If any man among you thinks himself one of the world’s clever ones, let him discard his cleverness that he may learn to be truly wise. For this world’s cleverness is stupidity to God. It is written: “He that taketh the wise in their craftiness”, and again, “The Lord knoweth the reasoning’s of the wise, that they are vain.” So let no one boast of men.”

Prov 2:6,9-11 (NIV) “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding…. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair–every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.”

Dreams –  Joel 2:12 (NIV) He says, “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”.

Memory – Proverbs 10:7 The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

My conclusion:

The Bible does agree that we have these fluctuations of our minds and with God they are good but without God, they can ruin us. I believe it is good to learn the truth about these habits of our minds and beliefs in relation to God’s word and warning. The practice of yoga helps us to become aware of these fluctuations within ourselves, so we can then ask God to help us overcome them.
